Tashweesh Live Review
Tashweesh are three Palestinian artists from Ramullah who mix audio visuals, live hip hop and field recordings.
They perform at three special summer performances in Scotland, before heading to tour Copenhagen. Their style is cutting across genres and cultures, and blurring and bisecting lines between live and recording-based music production. At the CCA the talented trio served up a stunning 45 minute set, every scene of which packed a punch. Their layered visuals and audio-loops will leave you mesmerised, not to mention boikutt’s mic sessions which syncopate throughout.
With visuals acting as narration to the soundtrack, there was an element of subversion in this politically-charged performance. At the Glasgow set, we were seated in regimented rows, rendering the performance reminiscent of the passive stance taken by many in the West to mass-mediated news coverage. Literally meaning ‘interference’ in Arabic or ‘to unsettle’ in Urdu, the Tashweesh set is designed to electrify your senses. This is not mere ‘edutainment’: Tashweesh have a real message, as well as a clear talent.
Also at ECA’s Tent Gallery, Edinburgh on Thursday 5th August, 4pm, in response to The Spacemakers Exhibit (on display until 24th August); Part of the Beyond Borders Scotland 2010 Summer Programme
