DRIES ALONE

Dries Van Noten. We’ve all heard the name, but have we all seen the fashion?

His name is the classic answer for any model/it girl/blogger’s when asked about who
they are into at the moment. For this very reason, I doubted it slightly. For such an established label, I have surprisingly never really looked at Van Noten work in detail. Until today.
The outcome?

Bliss. Beautiful tailoring, opulent colours and a hell of a lot of style. A completely
stylish mish-mash of everything that is in fashion at the moment- fur leopard print
scarves and gilets (killing two birds with one stone, I like it), well cut jackets in gold
and luxurious prints of rich blues, greens and purples, mixes of prints and patterns
within the same outfit (including military green), long leather gloves paired with a
black wool jumper and a shocking pink patterned skirt; and of course, the perfect
trouser shapes, spot on for autumn/winter 2010.

I could go on for hours (and maybe I will) about every last detail which has been
seen to; the black collar on the camel coat to match the buttons, the sheer top which
embellishments mimic the pattern of the leopard print coat worn over it. The use of
kahki trousers with a two-tone black and camel jacket, green khaki sleeves attached
to a lace evening dress. Even the subtle embellishment on the snake skin shoes is
understated- especially when worn with a matching embellished collar.

I am seriously impressed. For such an old label (dare I say that?), I didn’t expect such
cleverly thought out, ladylike yet tomboy style that I would gladly wear everyday.
The label suffered slightly in the 1990’s when Dries Van Noten was considered
too ‘eccentric’ a taste, but clearly he is back on track now- with much wanted
eccentricity used in his fabrics, and keeping it classic in his tailoring- the best mix.
